Your surroundings sound as if they were dismal, so those care packages must have been hugely welcome. If you feel like posting the half-moon lemon drizzle biscuit recipe, I for one would be most grateful!

Michael, I have discovered this year that the best pumpkin soup is made creamy with coconut milk. Try it for your special guest!

Another use for pumpkins: soup but you have to use cooking pumpkins not the jack-o'-lanterns type.

A dear lady is arriving this evening to sample my first try at this soup...:)

I feel really sorry no kids came to our door to "trick or treat". As a Romanian-German couple, Halloween doesn´t mean much to us neither, but I would sure open the door for kids in costumes and share some of my husband´s plentifull chocolates with them.

I saw some kids trick or treating in Rohrbach this evening, and I know my lot would also have loved to have been out there, but there's no point - just doesn't happen here.

(As South Africans, we don't do Halloween either, but who can resist the opportunity to wear vampire teeth and paint blood-stains on their faces?)

As Angela has said, the Doctor's House was known to us as the Ice Palace for a second reason:starched linen sheets. We'd have to crawl into a bed sheeted with these sheets and endeavour to warm up a small space out of which we dared not venture.

The other memory I have of this house was the installation and the removal of storm windows. As readers of this blog can see, the house has very large windows - about 2.2 metres high and 1 metre wide. They were made of wood and weighed about 25 kg. We'd have to slide them up a ladder, wiggle them over the lintels and slide them into their grooves. Somewhat strenuous and dangerous work. The process was reversed each spring. The present owner leaves them on year round.

Although I know the owners and could tour the house at any time, I prefer to preserve my childhood/teenage memories. Sometimes, I have found, you should never go back.

Hope you find a close approximation, Angela.

That was a pretty depressing end of the school year post, but this year things are definitely looking up! He actually enjoys history lessons.

I know the VERY house you mean and I too was in love with it. It was perfect for my family, just, in a dorp.

I am also emotionally stamped by my grandmother's house, and no other house lives up to it. How are we ever going to find our dream homes in this country?!

PS Good luck with the house-hunting this weekend ...
